Publisher’s description

Transparency is frequently cited as a desirable property of WAN acceleration, without an adequate explanation of costs and benefits. Transparency is not a panacea, and indeed can actually be harmful in some cases. In addition, there are different kinds of transparency, and unfortunately they are not all achievable simultaneously. This white paper describes application transparency, network transparency, and payload transparency. It is useful to understand these forms of transparency and the circumstances in which they are helpful or problematic. Such an understanding allows network architects and managers to determine what sort of transparency might be relevant for meeting the requirements of their network.
