The IT industry's best kept secret is out -- SAP is still up for grabs despite spurning its first suitor, Microsoft.
Microsoft and SAP initiated merger discussions late last year but broke off talks several months ago because of the complexity involved, according to statements issued by the software makers on Monday.
SAP has significantly expanded the partner network surrounding its NetWeaver software, signing up the industry's 'big gorillas' to create closer ties to its business applications.
"Henning Kagermann [SAP chief executive] talking about flexibility and adaptability is like [former French prime minister] Francois Mitterand talking about having a deep affection for American tourists. It's not true. Just because they say it's true doesn't make it true."
Unless one side or another decides to appeal, Friday's decision could mark the final chapter in a case once said to be a definitive one for antitrust law in the 21st century.
