Commentary: Many people are choosing to use notebooks instead of desktops as their primary computer. Here's why I think it's a bad idea.
Little cousin to Toshiba's new Tecra 9000, the AU$5280 Portégé 4000, announced last month, also comes with integrated connectivity for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless networks. But although Toshiba wrapped the Portégé 4000 in a smaller chassis with different components and stamped a lower price tag on it, some will still find it too expensive for their tastes. What you get for the money, though, is a lot of easy connectivity in a light package.
The first system available with the Transmeta Crusoe processor is the Sony VAIO PCG-C1VN PictureBook. This ultraportable weighs in at just under 1kg and comes with a sharp 1,024 x 480 active-matrix LCD that measures 22.6 cms diagonally.
If its elegant design, ultra portability and versatility doesn’t lure you in, then the superb performance of the Portégé 3480CT should. Suitable for intense use or for those on the go, this notebook is a standout in the portable PC market.
IBM's latest ThinkPad is the fastest notebook we've seen yet, at least for application performance. The rest of the solid but unremarkable system mixes robust security features and endless expansion options with staid design. Blazing speed notwithstanding, the T23 seems a bit overpriced for what it delivers.
